An atomic peek inside the hydrogel to grow T cells
Huixia Lu
(Instituto de Ciencias de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB) CSIC)
3D hydrogels are new and more efficient strategy for the cell cultures related to the manufacture of cellular products to combat cancer through cellular (immuno)therapies. Heparin has been chosen based on its capacity to interact with positively charged proteins such as the cytokine CCL21 which can affect T cell migration and proliferation. From the atomic level of research we finally designed a new protocol to grow T cells in hydrogels. So more T cells are obtained through our research to help patients to fight cancer!
Freezing a quantum fluid by heating
Juan Sánchez Baena
(Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya)
Generally, rising the temperature of a solid leads to its melting while cooling a fluid leads to solidification. This phenomena is present in our everyday life. However, things are not so straight-forward in the mysterious quantum world, where strange and surprising effects can revert turn this classical phenomenology upside-down! In this talk, we will briefly sketch an introduction to basic quantum concepts and the mechanism behind this puzzling effect.
