If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be? In a world where human gene editing is no longer science fiction, but is happening in labs all over the world, Pint of Science brings you a night with researchers from CRG Barcelona. We will learn all about CRISPR (a very recent gene editing technique) – How does it work? Why is it one of the most important discoveries of our generation? And why is science fiction an important tool to explore the ethical implications of gene editing?

CRISPR the coolest tool to modify genomes and much more

Victoria Neguembor (CRG)
Bacteria are super tiny creatures but are actually much smarter than you think. For example, they have powerful tools to defend themselves from virus and destroy them. CRISPR is one of these systems. In the last years, scientists found the way to hijack the CRISPR system and use it as a smart tool to change the sequence of our genes, to tune the behavior of cells and many more things. This opens exciting opportunities to cure diseases but it also poses ethical questions. Are you ready for CRISPR revolution?

Beyond Jurassic Park: Frontiers of Genomics and SF

José Luis Villanueva-Cañas (CRG + IMIM)
Will Blevins (CRG + IMIM)
Science fiction pushes past the frontier of modern technology and scientific understanding to explore new possibilities and applications, while simultaneously weighing the consequences that breakthrough advances could incur. Genetic engineering is undoubtedly familiar to science fiction readers and has been the cornerstone of countless stories such as Jurassic Park, the Altered Carbon or Gattaca. Could the events described in these fictional works exist in a near future? Is it ethical to edit the human genome? What could be the consequences? Can we please have pet dinosaurs? Come and find out!
