Consciousness in Men, Mice and Machines
Paul Verschure (Laboratory of Synthetic Perceptive, Emotive and Cognitive Systems, Center of Autonomous Systems and Neurorobotics, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, ICREA)
Understanding the nature of consciousness is one of the grand outstanding scientific challenges. Building on 20 years of work in psychology, neuroscience, AI, art and robotics, I have advanced the Distributed Adaptive Control theory of consciousness which gives precise hypotheses and predictions on the function, process and mechanisms of consciousness, using machines, animals and humans and takes a specific view on why the social machines of the future need to be conscious.
