Understanding the nature of consciousness is one of the grand outstanding scientific challenges. Building on 20 years of work in psychology, neuroscience, AI, art and robotics, I have advanced the Distributed Adaptive Control theory of consciousness which gives precise hypotheses and predictions on the function, process and mechanisms of consciousness, using machines, animals and humans and takes a specific view on why the social machines of the future need to be conscious.
